Merlock is a post-doom triumvirate from Spokane, Washington. Conjured in 2017, the band is now nearly a decade into the slow alchemy of refining a unique heaviness that merges the weight of its lyrical subject matter to its sonic architecture. Merlock moves between the crushing weight of traditional doom, the wide-open spaces of post-metal, and the unrelenting drag of progressive sludge. Like a chimera, Merlock resists simple taxonomy.

Their 2023 full-length Onward Strides Colossus established Merlock as a genuine force in the doom underground. The Obelisk noted "the potential for Merlock to carve a niche of their own within the various strains of capital 'H' Heavy." Decibel called them "a shadowy hybrid of wailing trad doom, garage-born psych rock, and the proggy side of sludge — singular in a super-saturated sea of stoner fuzz clones." Both assessments are accurate as far as they go. What they do not quite capture is the physicality of it — the way the sound lands in the chest before it reaches the mind.

Now Merlock returns with for fear of death…, a record structured as four alchemical movements: Phyrë, pStonë, Cæx, Cæstele. Cremation. Dissolution. Judgment. Initiation. The themes are ancient: grief, impermanence, transformation — ugly splinters that must be burned away before something truly luminous can emerge. The execution is mercurial.

Merlock have earned their place in the underground through devotion to their craft. Touring nationally since 2021. Two nights with High on Fire. Rain City Doom Fest alongside Acid King, Mizmor, and Ragana.

for fear of death… is the logical terminus of a band that has always been building toward something more than the sum of its parts — a mystical body of work rooted in genuine darkness, genuine craft, and a genuine commitment to lighting the cavernous depths of Being.
